Since beginning my journey in the Instructional Design and Educational Technology (IDET) Master’s program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in August 2023, I have experienced tremendous personal and professional growth. This program has not only deepened my love for teaching but also broadened my horizons, revealing how instructional design transcends traditional educational environments. Through my coursework, projects, and certifications, I have developed skills that prepare me to create impactful learning experiences in various industries, including corporate, healthcare, military, and nonprofit sectors. I am excited about the opportunities ahead as I continue to build on this solid foundation.
One of the first milestones in my IDET journey was completing a research project on neuroplasticity in the course Introduction to Research. My paper, Understanding Neuroplasticity: How the Body and Brain React to Exercise, explored how the brain’s ability to adapt is influenced by lifestyle factors such as exercise and nutrition. This project honed my ability to synthesize complex scientific findings and present them in a way that is both academically rigorous and relevant to real-world applications. By investigating how neuroplasticity impacts education, rehabilitation, and mental health, I laid the groundwork for applying research-based principles to instructional design practices.
In IDET 5300, I developed a strong understanding of instructional design theories, historical influences, and professional practices. Notable projects included creating an information article on the timeline of instructional design, a video presentation on Design Thinking, and an ethical dilemma scenario addressing challenges in educational technology. These experiences introduced me to foundational methodologies such as Action Mapping, ADDIE, and the Dick and Carey model, which I applied in all subsequent courses to align learning objectives with performance outcomes.
Through IDET 5302, I gained proficiency in using a variety of educational technologies. Highlights include earning Google Educator Level 1 Certification and Adobe Level 1 and 2 Certifications. These credentials enhanced my technical expertise in tools like Adobe Captivate, Articulate 360, and ScreenPal, essential for creating interactive learning experiences. I also developed a coaching plan aligned with ISTE standards and created video tutorials on tools like Zoom and Canva. Collaborating with classmates, I contributed to team presentations and webinars, demonstrating my ability to integrate technology into instructional strategies effectively.
The course IDET 5303 allowed me to explore hypermedia design and development. I designed a scenario-based eLearning experience for the Nature Collection Art Gallery using Adobe Captivate and Canva. This interactive module equipped sales associates with customer service recovery strategies. By incorporating AI tools, I streamlined content development and enhanced learner engagement. This project showcased my ability to design learner-centered solutions that address specific organizational needs.
In IDET 5304, I created an eLearning module for Crystal Clear Beginnings, focusing on workshop facilitation for organizing and decluttering. Using the ADDIE model, I collaborated with graduate students to design a blended learning program for second-grade language arts teachers. These projects emphasized the importance of performance gap analysis and project management while utilizing tools such as Google Classroom, MindMeister, and Canva.
IDET 5305 further expanded my capabilities as I developed an instructional module for Vegetarian Café Vineyard health coaches. This interactive program utilized Articulate 360, Canva, and ScreenPal to teach the eight principles of health, incorporating videos, audio, and quizzes. By employing the Dick and Carey model, I ensured the content was engaging, effective, and aligned with learning objectives.
In IDET 5310, I advanced my skills in leveraging internet resources for instructional purposes. I maintained an instructional design blog, documenting projects and sharing insights into current ID trends. Additionally, I designed a training course for Bible instructors, utilizing scenario-based eLearning to address real-life challenges. Tools like Google Suites and MindMeister supported the development of this impactful program.
As a project manager in IDET 5320, I led a team to deliver a comprehensive learning experience. Responsibilities included timeline management, stakeholder communication, and leveraging tools like Genially and Sway. Despite challenges, the team successfully delivered a polished final project, demonstrating my leadership and problem-solving skills.
Currently, I am enrolled in MGMT 5320, which focuses on individual and group behavior in organizations. This course complements my instructional design studies by enhancing my understanding of diversity, collaboration, and leadership within teams. My goals include:
Developing strategies to foster inclusive learning environments.
Enhancing conflict resolution skills for collaborative projects.
Applying organizational behavior theories to instructional design practices.
Through IDET 5397, I am assembling my professional portfolio, which showcases my journey and achievements in the IDET program. This portfolio includes artifacts, reflections, and a service-based practicum. My goals for this course include:
Creating a polished and comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates my instructional design expertise.
Gaining practical experience by collaborating with a partner organization on a real-world project.
Strengthening my ability to articulate the value of my skills to future employers.
I am preparing to take two capstone courses:
IDET 5360: This course will deepen my understanding of online course design, usability, and accessibility. My goals include:
Mastering Learning Management System (LMS) tools to create seamless online learning experiences.
Incorporating iNACOL and TxVSN standards into course development.
Developing strategies for assessing and enhancing student engagement in virtual environments.
IDET 5365: This course will focus on instructional activities and assessments for online learning. My goals include:
Researching best practices for promoting student success in online settings.
Designing assignments that meet standards-based learning goals.
Leveraging data from assessments to inform content modifications.
Beyond the program, I plan to:
Collaborate with a publishing director to create curriculum guides for parents.
Develop Bible study guides for children, teens, and adults through my ministry, Sisters for Eternity.
Expand my community outreach efforts, impacting families through educational and spiritual development.
Throughout the program, I have gained proficiency in key instructional design tools and methodologies, including:
Adobe Captivate and Articulate 360: Used for creating interactive eLearning modules.
Canva and ScreenPal: Essential for graphic design and video production.
Google Suites: Facilitating collaboration and content organization.
Action Mapping, ADDIE, and Dick and Carey Models: Ensuring instructional alignment and effectiveness.
My journey in the IDET Master’s program has been transformative, equipping me with the skills, tools, and mindset needed to excel in instructional design. From research and technology integration to eLearning development and project management, each experience has contributed to my growth as a professional. I am excited to continue using these skills to create innovative and impactful learning solutions that make a difference in diverse settings.
